Challenge

Awake Labs set out to commercialize hospital-based IP with a wearable that could track and manage anxiety in real time. Built on research from Holland Bloorview Kids Rehabilitation Hospital, it had to become a usable product for individuals with cognitive disabilities — particularly those on the autism spectrum.

Approach

As UX and product lead, I worked closely with the founding team to design and prototype the mobile experience paired with the wearable biosensor. Drawing on a background in educational psychology and seven years teaching autistic individuals, I helped make the interface intuitive, appropriate, and inclusive for neurodiverse users.

Results

We launched a functional MVP that connected wearable heart-rate data to a real-time “Anxiety Meter.” It was piloted in clinical environments and laid the groundwork for integration with Awake Labs' broader tracking platform, Reveal Stories.

Impact

The work moved the technology from early research toward commercialization — helping Awake Labs secure funding, validate usability, and form a platform that continues to support individuals, families, and caregivers in real-world care.
